We assist our clients in obtaining the authorization for entry into Italy as well as the preparation of documents to be presented to the competent Italian diplomatic authority, to issue the visa for stays that do not exceed 90 days in a six-month period. Entry into Italy for short stays is regulated by the Visa Code (EC Regulation no. 810/2009 of 13.7.2009, which entered into force on 5.4.2010).

Procedure and documents

The visa application must be submitted in writing, on the appropriate form completely filled in and signed by the applicant, together with a passport photo. The applicant must visit the diplomatic or consular mission in person, and will be heard on the reasons and circumstances of the visit.

The visa and documentation requirements vary according to the type of visa requested. The applicant must certify the purpose of the journey, the means of transport for the roundtrip, the means of subsistence during the trip, and the housing conditions. The diplomatic mission will perform security checks prior to entry, consulting by computer or electronically through the World Visa Network, the list of foreigners not eligible to enter the Schengen area. The term to release the visa is 15 days, and it can be extended, under certain circumstances, up to 60 days.

The legislation currently in force distinguishes between the following types of short-term visas:

  1. Uniform Schengen Visas (USV), valid for the territory of all Schengen countries (see the list of the Member States), issued for Airport transit (type A) and short-stays or travels (type C) up to 90 days, with one or more entries. The Schengen regulation allows the issuance of type C visas to prominent personalities who need visas on a regular basis and gives the necessary guarantees in order to stay up to 90 days per semester and they are valid for one to five years.
  2. Visas with limited territorial validity (VTL), released for humanitarian reasons, national interest, or under international obligations, valid only for the Schengen State of entry or in special cases for other Schengen States, where specifically indicated, without the possibility of access, not even transit, in the territory of the other Schengen States. They cannot be requested directly from the alien. They are issued by the diplomatic or consular mission for the above stated reasons.

The Visa Code distinguishes different types of short-term visas (90 days) based on the reasons for the request, as follows:

  • Business visa
  • Medical treatment visa
  • Sport competition visa
  • Invitation visa
  • Self-employment visa
  • Employment visa
  • Mission visa

The documentation required for obtaining the different types of short-term visas, will differ based on the country of origin of the applicant, or his/her habitual residence, or the reasons of the request.
